Professional paints for beginners - my recommendation if budget allows.
This is a suggestion for the set of 8 starter paints I also used for the mini kits. The Holbein suggestions are smaller tubes but this amount goes a long way. You don't need to invest in the larger Daniel Smith tubes unless you want to fill more than one pallette:
Daniel Smith 6 tube primaries set
Brown to add to the 6 starter set - choose either burnt umber or burnt Sienna. Sienna is lighter and warmer, Umber is darker and cooler. Both are great in the starter set.
Burnt Sienna Holbein - this is one option for the brown in the basic mini kit of 8
Burnt Sienna Daniel Smith - same as the Holbein but 3 times the size but pricier
Green to add to the basic set of 8 - choose either Sap or Viridian. Sap is warmer and Viridian is cooler towards a blue.
If you would like to use the different light blue I used in some mini pallets which differs from the Daniel Smith starter set of 6, it was Cerulean Blue. Here's the inks:
